Christmas Amigurumi Patterns: 7 Free Crochet Christmas Toys

Christmas amigurumi patterns: a crocheted Christmas tree with baubles, a snowman in a top hat and scarf, a gingerbread man and a penguin

Looking for Christmas amigurumi to crochet this year? Here are seven free Christmas crochet patterns, from a smiling little tree with a star on top to a snowman that never melts. Every pattern is written round by round, with a stitch count at the end of each round, a photo of every piece to check your work against, US terms and a printable PDF.

Four are made for the season: the Christmas tree, the snowman, the gingerbread man and the penguin. Three more are small, quick gifts for a stocking or a friend. The easy ones make a good first toy if you're new to amigurumi.

Christmas amigurumi patterns

1. Christmas tree

A cheerful little tree with a gold star on top, red and yellow baubles and a smiling face. It's one of our easy patterns, with few pieces and simple shaping.

Easy, about 5 in (13 cm) tall, in fingering (4-ply) yarn.

2. Snowman

Snowman amigurumi crochet pattern

A round snowman in a black top hat with a red band, a long red scarf, twig arms, a carrot nose and coal buttons. He never melts, so he can stay out all winter.

Easy, about 6.5 in (16 cm) tall, in DK (light worsted) yarn.

3. Gingerbread man

A gingerbread man with white icing on his hands and feet, rosy cheeks, a smile and three candy buttons in red and green.

Intermediate, about 6.5 in (16 cm) tall, in DK (light worsted) yarn.

4. Penguin

A plump penguin, white on the belly, with pink cheeks, an orange beak, and tiny orange feet. A winter buddy who can hang around long after the tree comes down.

Intermediate, about 6.5 in (17 cm) tall, in DK (light worsted) yarn.

Quick Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers

Not everything under the tree has to look like Christmas. These three make lovely gifts, and the potato and the pickle have both been crocheted by hand to test their patterns.

5. Highland cow

Highland cow amigurumi crochet pattern

A shaggy Highland cow calf with a long orange fringe, cream horns and dark hooves. Its coat is made lock by lock, so it takes time, and that's what makes it a special gift.

Advanced, about 6 in (15 cm) tall, in fingering (4-ply) yarn.

6. Positive potato

A small potato with a big smile and little arms, for anyone who needs some cheering on. It's quick, easy and fits in a stocking.

Easy, about 4.3 in (11 cm) tall, in DK (light worsted) yarn.

7. Positive pickle

A green pickle with dark spots, pink cheeks and a happy face, the potato's best friend. Make the two together.

Easy, about 3.9 in (10 cm) tall, in DK (light worsted) yarn.

Turn them into Christmas ornaments

Each of these little toys can go on the tree. Make one with thinner yarn and a smaller hook, and the same rounds give you a tinier toy: a pattern written for DK, crocheted in fingering (4-ply) yarn on a 2.25 mm hook, turns out small enough for a branch.

Before you close the head, thread some yarn or a thin ribbon through the top for the hanger, then tie the ends and tuck the knot inside. Once a piece is closed, you can't put in a safety eye, so the eyes go in first.

Or pick the size before the pattern is written: in the Crochet Pirate app, a toy you make from a photo can be Tiny, about 4 in (10 cm) tall, with fewer small details so it still works at that size.

Tips for crocheting toys as gifts

  • For a baby or a toddler, embroider the eyes instead of using safety eyes, and sew every piece on firmly. Here's how: amigurumi eyes.
  • Stuff firmly, so the toy keeps its shape after a lot of hugging.
  • Hide every yarn tail inside the toy, so nothing works its way out with play.
  • New to amigurumi? Start with the magic ring and how to read an amigurumi pattern, then pick an easy one: the tree, the snowman, the potato or the pickle.
  • Give yourself time. The easy patterns go quickly, while the gingerbread man, the penguin and the Highland cow have more pieces to sew.

A Christmas toy from your own photo

Want something none of these patterns has, like your dog in a Santa hat or the ornament your grandmother made? Snap a photo or draw it, and Crochet Pirate writes the pattern for it, round by round, with a picture of every step.

Questions about Christmas amigurumi

What is the easiest Christmas amigurumi for a beginner?

The Christmas tree and the snowman are our easy Christmas patterns: just a few pieces, simple shaping, and single crochet in the round. The Positive potato and the Positive pickle are easy as well, and even faster.

How big are these Christmas amigurumi?

Between about 4 in (10 cm) and 6.5 in (17 cm) tall, in the yarn each pattern names. In thinner yarn on a smaller hook they come out smaller, small enough to hang as ornaments.

What yarn is best for Christmas amigurumi?

Use the weight each pattern names: DK (light worsted) for most of these, fingering (4-ply) for the tree and the Highland cow. Cotton gives crisp stitches and acrylic is soft and easy to wash; both work well.

Are these Christmas crochet patterns free?

Yes. Every one is free on its page, and you can grab a printable PDF if you have a free account.
