Hi there! You're going to crochet a happy little Christmas tree, complete with a star, some baubles, and a big smile. Just go one small step at a time, and you'll be surprised at what your hands can make.
At a glance

What you'll need
Yarn
fingering (4-ply): yarn weight 1, super fine
- Dark green: about 33 yd (30 m), 1 ball, 1.75 oz / 186 yd (50 g / 170 m)
- Brown: a small scrap
- Sunny yellow: about 14 yd (13 m), 1 ball, 1.75 oz / 186 yd (50 g / 170 m)
- Red: a small scrap
- Dark chocolate: a small scrap
- Peach: a small scrap
- Mustard: a small scrap
Tools and notions
- 2.5 mm crochet hook: for fingering (4-ply) cotton yarn
- 6 mm black safety eyes: 1 pair
- Polyester toy stuffing: a couple of big handfuls
- Yarn needle (big eye, blunt tip)
- 1 stitch marker: A scrap of yarn or a paperclip will do as well.
- Scissors
Size and gauge
With this yarn and a 2.5 mm hook, the Christmas tree ends up around 5 in (13 cm) tall: roughly 27 sc and 30 rounds per 4 in (10 cm). Gauge doesn't really matter, a different yarn or hook just makes it a different size.
Abbreviations (US terms)
| Rnd | round, worked in a continuous spiral: don't join, move the stitch marker up each round |
| sc | single crochet |
| inc | increase: 2 sc in the same stitch |
| dec | decrease: sc 2 stitches together (the invisible decrease looks neatest) |
| ch | chain |
| st(s) | stitch(es) |
| ( ) x6 | repeat what's in brackets 6 times |
| (12) | the stitches you have at the end of the round |
If you're just learning them, the crochet abbreviations page walks you through how to make each one.
Good to know
- Work your stitches tight, or the stuffing will peek out. Notice holes? Switch to a smaller hook.
- Work in a spiral, and at the beginning of every round, move your stitch marker up.
- When you're going to sew a piece on, keep a long tail on it.
- Safety eyes and small parts can be a choking hazard for children under 3. For little ones, embroider the eyes instead.

Christmas tree crochet pattern
Work every section one after another, and at the close of each round count your stitches: the figure in brackets tells you how many you ought to have.
Tree
Worked in dark green.
Note: Ch 8. Make a slip knot, then chain 8. That small chain forms the oval's spine, you'll work all around it.

| Rnds 9-10 | sc in each st around | (56) |
| Rnd 11 | (sc 26, dec) x2 | (54) |
| Rnd 12 | sc 12, dec, sc 25, dec, sc 13 | (52) |

| Rnd 18 | sc 9, dec, sc 19, dec, sc 10 | (40) |
| Rnd 19 | (sc 18, dec) x2 | (38) |
Note: Eye time! Push the safety eyes in between round 18 and round 19, with 5 stitches between them, on the smoothest side (that's the face, the little jog where laps start goes at the back). Look at it from a distance before snapping the backs on inside: once they click, they stay forever.
| Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
| Rnd 20 | sc 8, dec, sc 17, dec, sc 9 | (36) |
| Rnd 21 | (sc 16, dec) x2 | (34) |
Check: You want yours to come out looking like an open cup, roughly 2.6 in (6.6 cm) across and 1.7 in (4.4 cm) deep, with 34 stitches around the rim.

| Rnd 22 | sc 7, dec, sc 15, dec, sc 8 | (32) |
| Rnd 23 | (sc 14, dec) x2 | (30) |
| Rnd 24 | sc 6, dec, sc 13, dec, sc 7 | (28) |

| Rnd 29 | (sc 8, dec) x2 | (18) |
Note: Push the filling in now, while the opening is still wide enough. Grab little tufts, start by tucking them into the far end, and keep at it until it feels solid and bouncy. Add a bit more before the final round.
Check: What you make should come out like a stuffed piece, around 2.7 in (6.9 cm) wide and 3.4 in (8.6 cm) tall, and you'll leave an opening of 18 stitches.
| Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
| Rnd 30 | sc 3, dec, sc 7, dec, sc 4 | (16) |
| Rnd 31 | (sc 6, dec) x2 | (14) |
| Rnd 32 | sc 2, dec, sc 5, dec, sc 3 | (12) |
| Rnd 33 | dec x6 | (6) |
Note: When you're done, snip the yarn and leave a tail about the length of your hand. Put it on the yarn needle, pass it through the front loop of every one of the last stitches, then pull it tight, just like a drawstring bag, the hole closes up. If this piece will be sewn on, keep a long tail; if not, tuck it inside.
Check: All set! Your tree is now a fully closed, firmly stuffed piece, around 2.7 in (6.8 cm) wide and 3.9 in (9.9 cm) tall.

Trunk

Check: When you're done, it should come out as a flat circle, around 1 in (2.5 cm) across, and you'll have 21 stitches around the edge.
| Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
| Rnds 4-6 | sc in each st around | (21) |
Note: Slip stitch into the next stitch. Then cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, around 12 in (30 cm), since you'll use it to sew the trunk on. With the back of your hook, push the stuffing down to the end and stuff it softly.
Check: All set! Now your trunk is an open piece, roughly 1.1 in (2.8 cm) wide and 0.5 in (1.2 cm) long, and you've got a long yarn tail.

Star center

|---|---|---|
| Rnd 5 | (sc, dec, dec) x2 | (6) |
Note: When you're done, snip the yarn and leave a tail about the length of your hand. Put it on the yarn needle, pass it through the front loop of every one of the last stitches, then pull it tight, just like a drawstring bag, the hole closes up. If this piece will be sewn on, keep a long tail; if not, tuck it inside.

Putting the christmas tree together
Every piece is done, so let's stitch them up nice and easy and see your tree come alive.

1. Attach the trunk
Put it centered at the very bottom of the tree (round 1). Keep the open edge flat on the tree, then pin it all around. With the long tail, stitch all the way round the edge: under a stitch of the trunk, then under the tree right beside it. Just before the gap shuts, add a final bit of stuffing. It should finish pointing straight out.

2. Attach the star point (top)
Put it centered right at the tip of the star center (the last round, 5). Keep the open edge flat on the star center and pin around the whole thing. With the long tail, stitch all the way around: under a stitch on the star point (top), then under the star center right beside it. Right before the gap shuts, tuck in a final bit of stuffing. It ought to finish pointing straight out.

3. Attach the star point (upper sides)s
At round 4, put the first one on the star center, one on each side. Lay the open edge flat against the star center, then pin it all the way round. With the long tail, stitch around the whole edge: under one stitch of the star point (upper sides), then under the star center right beside it. Just before the gap closes, add a final bit of stuffing. It should end up pointing out and down, roughly 20 degrees from straight out. After that, repeat for the other one on the opposite side, mirrored.

4. Attach the star point (lower sides)s
Put one on the star center at round 2, one on each side. Keep the open edge flat against the star center and pin it all round. With the long tail, sew all the way around the edge: under one stitch of the star point (lower sides), then under the star center right next to it. Just before the gap closes, add a last bit of stuffing. It should end up pointing straight out. Then do the same for the other one on the other side, mirrored.

5. Attach the star center
Put it centered right on the top of the tree, that last round, 33. Take the starting end of the star center (where the magic ring is), hold it against the tree, and sew around where they meet, back and forth, then pull the yarn snug so there's no gap. It should point straight out when you're done.

6. Attach the red bauble (upper)
Place it on the tree at round 24, at the front, a little to the toy's right. Lay the red bauble (upper) along the tree, running up from its starting end. Pin it, then sew it on along both sides with the long tail, catching the tree underneath.

7. Attach the yellow bauble (upper)
At round 22, put it on the tree, in front, just a bit to the toy's left. Take the yellow bauble (upper) and lay it up along the tree from its starting end. Pin it down, then with the long tail sew it on along both sides, catching the tree underneath.

8. Attach the yellow bauble (lower)
At round 12, set it on the tree, toward the front and just a bit to the toy's right. Take the yellow bauble (lower) and run it up along the tree from its starting end. Pin it down, then use the long tail to sew it on along both sides, catching the tree underneath.

9. Attach the red bauble (lower)
Put it on the tree at round 12, near the front, just a bit to the toy's left. Set the red bauble (lower) along the tree, going up from its starting end. Pin it down, then stitch it on with the long tail along both sides, catching the tree underneath.

10. Attach the yellow bauble (bottom center)
Place it on the tree at round 9, at the front, in the middle. Lay the yellow bauble (bottom center) along the tree, running up from its starting end. Pin it, then sew it on along both sides with the long tail, catching the tree underneath.

11. Sew the mouth
With dark chocolate yarn on the tree, around round 17, at the front, in the middle. How: come up at one corner, go down 3 stitches along, then catch the middle of that long stitch and pull it down one round to make a curve.

12. Sew the cheeks
With peach yarn on the tree, near round 17, one on each side of the front. How: 2 short stitches next to each other make one cheek.

13. Sew the cap of the upper red bauble
Around round 26, on the front, a bit to the toy's right, using mustard yarn on the tree. How to do it: work 4 or 5 stitches stacked on top of each other over those same 2 stitches, until it looks nice and plump.

14. Sew the cap of the upper yellow bauble
Using mustard yarn on the tree, near round 24, at the front, just a bit to the toy's left. How to do it: work 4 or 5 stitches stacked on top of each other into those same 2 stitches until it looks nice and plump.

15. Sew the caps of the two lower baubles
Around round 14, on the tree, with mustard yarn, put one on each side of the front. Here's how: work 4 or 5 stitches stacked on top of each other into the same 2 stitches until it looks nice and plump.

16. Sew the cap of the bottom yellow bauble
Around round 11, at the front and in the middle, with mustard yarn on the tree. How to do it: over those same 2 stitches, work 4 or 5 stitches stacked on top of each other, until it looks nice and plump.

17. Hide the tails
For every loose tail: thread it on the needle, poke it into the toy and out somewhere else, give it a little tug, and snip it close. The end disappears inside. All done!
All done!
You made it! Your own little Christmas tree is done now, happy and all set to spread joy the whole season.

Questions about this pattern
How big is this crochet Christmas tree?
A little standing tree, around 5.1 in (13 cm) tall, made in fingering (4-ply) cotton with a 2.5 mm hook. Work those same rounds in DK cotton using a 3.5 mm hook, and you get a bigger tree for a shelf.
Is it an easy Christmas tree to crochet?
Yep. It's a simple pattern: the tree is just one cone with a flat base, crocheted in the round using single crochet, increases, and decreases. The trunk, the star, and five little baubles are small pieces you sew on, while the smile and cheeks get embroidered with a few stitches.
Can I hang it on the tree as an ornament?
It stands up on its own, yet it's light enough to hang. Thread a yarn loop through the star's top, then hang it on a strong branch.
How big is the finished christmas tree?
With fingering (4-ply) yarn and a 2.5 mm hook, the christmas tree ends up around 5 in (13 cm) tall. If you use thicker yarn and a bigger hook, you get a bigger toy; the rounds don't change.
What yarn and hook do I need?
Fingering (4-ply) cotton using a 2.5 mm hook, in 7 colors: dark green, brown, sunny yellow, red, dark chocolate, peach, mustard. Any yarn is fine if you change your hook size up or down so the stitches stay tight.
Is this pattern good for beginners?
Yep, it's labeled Easy: single crochet worked in the round, plus increases and decreases, and each round has a stitch count.
Can I sell what I make?
Sure, you can sell the toys you make using this pattern, and it's nice if you give a shout-out to Crochet Pirate. But please don't share or sell the pattern itself, just send folks to this page instead.
