Hi there! You're going to crochet a happy little pineapple. It has a leafy top and tiny feet. Just go one small step at a time, and you'll be amazed how fast it comes to life.

What you'll need
Yarn
DK (light worsted): yarn weight 3, light
- Mustard: about 38 yd (35 m), 1 ball, 1.75 oz / 137 yd (50 g / 125 m)
- Pea green: about 21 yd (19 m), 1 ball, 1.75 oz / 137 yd (50 g / 125 m)
- Dark green: about 27 yd (25 m), 1 ball, 1.75 oz / 137 yd (50 g / 125 m)
- Dark chocolate: a small scrap
- Pink: a small scrap
- Orange: a small scrap
Tools and notions
- 3.5 mm crochet hook: for DK (light worsted) cotton yarn
- 8 mm black safety eyes: 1 pair
- Polyester toy stuffing: a couple of big handfuls
- Yarn needle (big eye, blunt tip)
- 1 stitch marker: A scrap of yarn or a paperclip will do as well.
- Scissors
Size and gauge
When you use this yarn and a 3.5 mm (US E-4) hook, Pineapple ends up around 6 in (14 cm) tall: roughly 20 sc and 22 rounds per 4 in (10 cm). Gauge doesn't really matter: a different yarn or hook just makes it a different size.
Abbreviations (US terms)
| Rnd | round, worked in a continuous spiral: don't join, move the stitch marker up each round |
| sc | single crochet |
| inc | increase: 2 sc in the same stitch |
| dec | decrease: sc 2 stitches together (the invisible decrease looks neatest) |
| st(s) | stitch(es) |
| ( ) x6 | repeat what's in brackets 6 times |
| (12) | the stitches you have at the end of the round |
If you're just learning them, the crochet abbreviations page walks you through how to make each one.
Good to know
- Work your stitches tight, or the stuffing will peek out. Notice holes? Switch to a smaller hook.
- Work in a spiral, and at the beginning of every round, move your stitch marker up.
- When you're going to sew a piece on, keep a long tail on it.
- Safety eyes and small parts can be a choking hazard for children under 3. For little ones, embroider the eyes instead.

Pineapple crochet pattern
Work every section one after another, and at the close of each round count your stitches: the figure in brackets tells you how many you ought to have.
Pineapple body
Worked in mustard.
| Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
| Rnd 1 | 6 sc in magic ring | (6) |
| Rnd 2 | inc x6 | (12) |
| Rnd 3 | (sc, inc) x6 | (18) |
| Rnd 4 | (sc 2, inc) x6 | (24) |
| Rnd 5 | (sc 3, inc) x6 | (30) |
| Rnd 6 | (sc 4, inc) x6 | (36) |
Check: What you want is a flat circle, roughly 2.2 in (5.7 cm) wide, and it should have 36 stitches around the outside.
| Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
| Rnd 7 | sc in each st around | (36) |
| Rnd 8 | (sc 5, inc) x6 | (42) |
| Rnd 9 | sc in each st around | (42) |
| Rnd 10 | (sc 6, inc) x6 | (48) |
| Rnds 11-15 | sc in each st around | (48) |
Note: Eyes now! Put the safety eyes in between round 14 and round 15, leaving 6 stitches between them, on the smoothest side (that's the face, the little jog where laps start belongs at the back). Check it from far away before you snap the backs on inside: after they click, they're there for good.
| Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
| Rnd 16 | sc in each st around | (48) |
Check: What you want is an open cup, roughly 3 in (7.6 cm) across and 1.4 in (3.6 cm) deep, with 48 stitches around the rim.
| Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
| Rnd 17 | sc in each st around | (48) |
| Rnd 18 | (sc 6, dec) x6 | (42) |
| Rnd 19 | sc in each st around | (42) |
| Rnd 20 | (sc 5, dec) x6 | (36) |
| Rnd 21 | (sc 4, dec) x6 | (30) |
| Rnd 22 | (sc 3, dec) x6 | (24) |
Note: Push the filling in now, while the opening is still wide enough. Grab little tufts, start by tucking them into the far end, and keep at it until it feels solid and bouncy. Add a bit more before the final round.
Check: Your piece should come out looking stuffed, around 2.8 in (7 cm) tall and 3.5 in (8.8 cm) wide, and you'll leave an opening of 24 stitches.
| Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
| Rnd 23 | (sc 2, dec) x6 | (18) |
| Rnd 24 | (sc, dec) x6 | (12) |
| Rnd 25 | dec x6 | (6) |
Note: When you're done, snip the yarn and leave a tail about the length of your hand. Put it on the yarn needle, pass it through the front loop of every one of the last stitches, then pull it tight, just like a drawstring bag, the hole closes up. If this piece will be sewn on, keep a long tail; if not, tuck it inside.
Check: All set! Your pineapple body is now a fully closed piece, stuffed firmly, and measures about 3.2 in (8.2 cm) tall and 3.2 in (8.2 cm) wide.

Foot (make 2)
Worked in mustard.
| Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
| Rnd 1 | 6 sc in magic ring | (6) |
| Rnd 2 | inc x6 | (12) |
Check: What you want is a flat circle, roughly 0.7 in (1.9 cm) wide, and the edge should have 12 stitches.
| Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
| Rnds 3-4 | sc in each st around | (12) |
Note: Put a slip stitch in the next stitch. Then cut the yarn, but leave a long tail, around 12 in (30 cm), since you'll use it to sew the foot on. Stuff it gently, using the back of your hook to push the stuffing down to the end.
Check: All set! Now your foot should be an open piece that's around 0.9 in (2.2 cm) wide and 0.5 in (1.2 cm) long, plus a long yarn tail.

Worked in pea green.
| Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
| Rnd 1 | 4 sc in magic ring | (4) |
| Rnd 2 | (sc, inc) x2 | (6) |
Check: What you want is an open cup, roughly 0.4 in (1 cm) across and 0.3 in (0.8 cm) deep, with 6 stitches around the rim.
| Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
| Rnd 3 | sc in each st around | (6) |

| Rnd 5 | sc in each st around | (8) |
| Rnd 6 | (sc 3, inc) x2 | (10) |
| Rnd 7 | sc in each st around | (10) |
| Rnd 8 | (sc 4, inc) x2 | (12) |
Check: What you want is something that looks like an open cup, roughly 0.7 in (1.9 cm) across and 1.3 in (3.4 cm) deep, with 12 stitches around the rim.
| Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
| Rnds 9-11 | sc in each st around | (12) |
| Rnd 12 | (sc 4, dec) x2 | (10) |
| Rnd 13 | (sc 3, dec) x2 | (8) |
Note: Slip stitch into the next stitch. Then cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, about 12 in (30 cm), since you'll use it to sew on the center leaf. Push the stuffing to the end with the back of your hook, and stuff it softly.
Check: Done! Your center leaf should now be an open piece about 0.9 in (2.2 cm) wide and 2.3 in (5.8 cm) long, with a long yarn tail.

Worked in dark green.
| Round | Instructions | Stitches |
|---|---|---|
| Rnd 1 | 4 sc in magic ring | (4) |

| Rnds 8-10 | sc in each st around | (9) |
| Rnd 11 | sc 7, dec | (8) |
| Rnd 12 | (sc 2, dec) x2 | (6) |
Note: Slip stitch into the next stitch. Then cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, around 12 in (30 cm), to sew the inner dark leaf on with. Push the stuffing to the end with the back of your hook, and stuff it softly.
Check: All set! Your inner dark leaf is now an open piece, roughly 2.1 in (5.4 cm) long and 0.6 in (1.6 cm) wide, with a long yarn tail.

Check: All set! Your low dark leaf is now an open piece, roughly 1.2 in (3 cm) long and about 0.6 in (1.6 cm) wide, plus a long yarn tail.

Putting the pineapple together
Once every part is done, we can join them and see your pineapple come to life.

1. Attach the feet
Put the first one onto the pineapple body at round 4, one on each side of the front. Keep the open edge flat against the pineapple body, then pin it all around. With the long tail, sew around the whole edge: under one stitch of the foot, then under the pineapple body right beside it. Just before the gap closes, add a final bit of stuffing. It should end up pointing straight out. After that, do the same for the other one on the other side, mirrored.

2. Attach the inner dark leaves
At round 23, they get attached to the pineapple body, spaced out evenly the whole way around (the first one sits at the front, slightly to the toy's left). Pin every one in place first, so the gaps come out even. Then, for each: press the open edge flat against the body and pin it all the way round. With the long tail, stitch around the entire edge: under a stitch of the inner dark leaf, then under the pineapple body right beside it. Right before the gap shuts, tuck in a final bit of stuffing. It ought to finish pointing straight out.

3. Attach the outer pea leaves
At round 20, attach these to the pineapple body, spaced evenly around (the first one at the front, centered). First pin them all so the gaps look even. For every leaf: press the open edge flat onto the pineapple body, then pin it all the way around. With the long tail, stitch around the whole edge: under one stitch of the outer pea leaf, then under the pineapple body right beside it. Right before the gap shuts, tuck in a final bit of stuffing. It ought to finish pointing straight out.

4. Attach the low dark leaves
You'll attach these to the pineapple body at round 19, spaced evenly around the back: the first sits on the toy's left side, and the last sits on the toy's right side. Pin every one in place first, so the gaps come out even. Then, for each: press the open edge flat against the pineapple body and pin it all the way around. With the long tail, stitch around the whole edge: under one stitch of the low dark leaf, then under the pineapple body right beside it. Right before the gap closes, add a final bit of stuffing. It should finish pointing straight out.

5. Attach the center leaf
Put it on the front of the pineapple body, in the middle, at round 24. Like a hat, pull the center leaf over the pineapple body, so its edge sits all the way round on round 24. Pin it evenly, then sew all around the edge: under one stitch of the center leaf, then under the pineapple body right next to it.

6. Sew the mouth
With dark chocolate yarn on the pineapple body, around round 13, at the front, in the middle. How: come up at one corner, go down 3 stitches along, then catch the middle of that long stitch and pull it down one round to make a curve.

7. Sew the cheeks
Using pink yarn on the pineapple body near round 13, put one on each side of the front. Here's how: 2 short stitches next to each other make a cheek.

8. Sew the diamond lattice, low row
Grab your orange yarn and work on the pineapple body at these spots: near round 6, front and center; near round 6, one on each side of the front; near round 6, one on each side; near round 6, one on each side, toward the back; near round 6, one on each side, toward the back. Here's how: one stitch slanting across 2 stitches, then another one crossing it the opposite way.

9. Sew the diamond lattice, second row
Using orange yarn on the pineapple body, place these: near round 11, front and center; near round 11, one at each side of the front; near round 11, one on each side; near round 11, one on each side, toward the back; near round 11, one on each side, toward the back. How to do it: one stitch slanting across 2 stitches, then another crossing it the opposite way.

10. Sew the diamond lattice, third row
With orange yarn on the pineapple body, in these spots: around round 16, at the front, in the middle; around round 16, one on each side of the front; around round 16, one on each side; around round 16, one on each side, toward the back; around round 16, one on each side, toward the back. How: one stitch going diagonally over 2 stitches, then a second one crossing it the other way.

11. Sew the diamond lattice, top row
Grab your orange yarn and work on the pineapple body at these places: near round 20, front and center; near round 20, one on either side of the front; near round 20, one on each side; near round 20, one on each side, toward the back; near round 20, one on each side, toward the back. Here's how: make one stitch that goes diagonally across 2 stitches, then add a second one crossing it in the opposite direction.

12. Hide the tails
For every loose tail: thread it on the needle, poke it into the toy and out somewhere else, give it a little tug, and snip it close. The end disappears inside. All done!
All done!
You did it! Your smiling pineapple is done, and you made the whole thing with your own two hands.

Questions about this pattern
Is this the pineapple stitch?
Nope. The pineapple stitch is a lace design you see in doilies and shawls. But this one is a stuffed toy pineapple, an amigurumi, made with plain single crochet in the round.
How are the diamonds on the pineapple made?
They're sewn on, not crocheted in. The body is just plain single crochet in a single color, and the diamond lattice gets stitched on afterward using orange yarn, one row at a time.
How big is the finished pineapple?
With DK (light worsted) yarn and a 3.5 mm (US E-4) hook, the pineapple ends up around 6 in (14 cm) tall. Use thicker yarn and a bigger hook, and you get a bigger toy, the rounds don't change.
What yarn and hook do I need?
With a 3.5 mm (US E-4) hook and DK (light worsted) cotton, you'll want 6 colors: mustard, pea green, dark green, dark chocolate, pink, orange. If you change your hook size up or down to keep the stitches tight, any yarn works.
Is this pattern good for beginners?
Yep, it's labeled Easy: single crochet worked in the round, plus increases and decreases, and each round has a stitch count.
Can I sell what I make?
Sure, you can sell the toys you make using this pattern, and it's nice if you give a shout-out to Crochet Pirate. But please don't share or sell the pattern itself, just send folks to this page instead.
